The Grand Imam of Al-Azhar mosque Sheikh Ahmed Al-Tayeb welcomed the suggestion to re-discuss the Azhar institution’s participation in the "Constituent Assembly of the Constitution" at the Islamic Research Academy, and to reconsider the decision to withdraw from the Constituent Assembly.
Al-Tayeb’s approval came, this afternoon, after he received Dr. Mohamed Morsi, Chairman of Freedom and Justice party (FJP); and Dr. Mohamed Beltagy, Secretary of the FJP in Cairo and member of parliament. They updated the Azhar Sheikh with facts and details of what had been discussed regarding the formation of the committee tasked with drafting the new constitution.
Later, Dr. Beltagy said that the meeting confirmed with the Grand Imam the FJP’s commitment to the Azhar document stating the basic principles. He added that they also reviewed the current attempts to restore harmony and consensus between the various parties in the constituent panel, including endeavors to replace some members of the FJP, from the panel, by ones from the ‘reserve’ list non- FJP personalities.
Further, Dr. Beltagy said that the meeting also discussed the agreement reached with political parties and forces on the formation of specialized committees to serve as advisory bodies the Constituent Assembly can refer to in specialized subjects, including the institution of Al-Azhar, its mission and vital role.
