Abu Zuhri: Gaza Detentions, Tortures Groundless Claims

The Spokesman for Hamas movement Sami Abu Zuhri denied reports that any political detentions or tortures were carried out by Hamas movement leaders of the Executive force elements against any Palestinian citizen in Gaza.

Abu Zuhri pointed out that Hamas movement is carrying out intensive contacts with all Arab leaders and concerned parties to exercise pressures on president Mahmoud Abbas to initiate a dialogue with Hamas .

Abu Zuhri confirmed that the dialogue is the only solution for all parties to end the current crisis .

Sami Abu Zuhri told Ikhwanweb:” The torture reports are groundless claims which circulated by parties affiliated ot close to the Palestinian Authority (PA) leaders. They aim at distorting the image of the movement and to whitewash crimes committed by the PA against Hamas members in The West Bank. Abou Zuhri added that Hamas may detain persons in Gaza but it is due to security or criminal (not political) reasons, and according to law.

Asked about the dialogue with the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Abu Zuhri said:” Hamas movement has been carrying out intensive contacts with all Arab leaders and concerned parties to pressure on president Abbas to sit to the negotiations table. However, Abbas refuses and continues his policy of seeking foreign intervention against Hamas movement. The security situation has improved in Gaza. There is still the problem of the Palestinians who are stuck at Rafah Crossing. We are following up this problem with the Egyptian authorities to solve it. As for the situation in the West Bank, the Palestinian Authority is still arresting, torturing and throwing to prisons Hamas members. Mahmoud Abbas is still rejecting all calls for sitting to the table of dialogue. He is improving his relations with the West to increase his enmity to the movement and all the Palestinian people.

Regarding asking Salam Fayyad to form a care-taker government, Abu Zuhri said:” Salam Fayyad”s government is illegitimate because it has no legal basis. Consequently, we do not deal with it and don”t deal with any of its members. Reassigning it without presenting its line-up before parliament only confirms its illegitimacy. So, we consider it shameful for any country to deal with this cabinet because it violates the simplest democratic values.

How come that they deal with government that was established on no legal grounds while the legitimate government which has assumed power through elections and the Palestinian Legislative Council are avoided?”, wondered Abou Zuhri.
