The Muslim Brotherhood in Lebanon announced it has secured the approval of the Lebanese government to form its first political party in the country. The new party will be named the “Reform and Development Party (RDP)” and will be the first political wing of the Sunni Muslims in Lebanon.

RDP will represent a political challenge to the Future Movement led by Saad Al Hariri, which is also expected to transform into political party.

Since 1964, the Muslim Brotherhood existed in Lebanon under the banner of the “Islamic Group”, an extension of the Muslim Brotherhood ideology from Syria and Egypt. The movement then enjoyed a widespread presence throughout Lebanon especially in the mostly Sunni areas where several members of the MB were able to make their ways to the Parliament and municipalities. Recently, the Muslim Brotherhood in Lebanon under the leadership of Faisal Molouy, has opposed the re-election of Emile Lahoud and called for his resignation.

Sources close to the Reform and Development Party indicated the new party would work according the bylaws, which govern other parties already in place and will be open for all Lebanese. The new party will also learn from similar experiences in Jordan, Yemen and Egypt and will identify itself as a national party based on Islamic principles.
