Khaled Mishaal, the political bureau chairman of the Hamas Movement, Sunday evening met with Rev. Jesse Jackson, a former US presidential candidate, in Damascus to discuss the issue of the captured Israeli soldier in Gaza, according to Mohammed Nazzal, the Hamas political bureau member.

Nazzal described the meeting as "frank, important and beneficial", and told PIC that Jackson expressed willingness during the meeting to offer his good offices on the release of Gilad Shalit, the IOF serviceman who was captured on June 25 by the armed wings of three resistance factions including the Qassam Brigades of Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

Mishaal told Jackson that his Movement welcomed his mediation on the basis of reciprocity and added that Israeli obstinacy was the reason for not reaching positive results in that case so far, Nazzal elaborated.

Jackson on Sunday met Syrian president Bashar Al-Assad and left for Beirut at night to meet Lebanese parliament speaker Nabih Berri over the issue of the two captured Israeli soldiers by Lebanese Hizbullah fighters. Jackson is then expected to visit Tel Aviv to negotiate with Israeli officials the same question and to brief them on results of his tour.
