▪ Court sentences against the free women of Egypt shake the independence of the judiciary and thrust it into the political struggle.

▪ The judiciary sentences the young women of Alexandria within days, but proceeds with the slowness of a tortoise in sentencing Mubarak and his gang.

▪ The repressive tactics of coup authorities are a barbaric response to the free women of Egypt practicing their rights to congregate peacefully and to free expression.

The Anti-Coup Pro-Legitimacy National Alliance was shocked by the unjust sentencing to 11 years in prison under strange and false accusations of 14 young women of the "7 AM" movement which supports legitimacy and rejects the coup. This follows the sentencing of Sumaiya Khaled, engineering student at Al-Azhar University, to 4 years in absentia, and the continuing court sessions for activist Sumaiya El-Shawwaf, member of Women Against the Coup, all of which prove that the independence of the judiciary is dead.

These decisions against the resistance to the coup expose the extent to which the independence of the judiciary has been shaken and degraded, and the insistence on entangling the judiciary in the settlement of accounts and thrusting it into the political struggle. These are the same reasons for which the judiciary is proceeding with the speed of a tortoise in the trials of Mubarak and his gang.

These events coincide with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, in which the whole world condemns violence against women, and in which coup authorities flirted with the western world by releasing 20 young women opposed to the demonstration law and military trials of civilians women who were practicing their constitutional rights all of which puts the independence of the judiciary into question.

These repressive practices are the coup authorities’ excessive and barbaric response to honorable women of Egypt practicing their rights to peaceful congregation and free expression. This is a violation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, to both of which Egypt is a signatory.

The Alliance is proud of the free, steadfast women of Egypt. It urges all Egyptians to gather, starting at 7 AM on Saturday, in solidarity with the "7 AM" movement in various activities under the banner "The Free Women of Egypt are Stronger", affirming that recent events are an expression of the vileness and cowardice of the military coup.

The Revolution continues.
