Beltagy: Attack on Cathedral Desperate and Futile Attempt to Ignite Sectarian Strife

Dr. Mohamed Beltagy, member of the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP)’s Executive Bureau, said: "Despicable attacks on the cathedral now are acts of subversion designed to cause division and conflict. They have nothing to do with religion.

"The course of events in Khossos (Qaliubiya province, north of Cairo) confirms that the latest clashes are not sectarian but a contrived mess exploiting religious emotions in an attempt to arouse widespread factional hatred and fighting some tried and failed to produce previously in Qena, Imbaba, Atfeih, Maspero and Shubra Al-Khaima."

Dr. Beltagy urged Muslims and Christians to stand as one against the instigators of communal strife and contention.

"Perpetrators of criminal acts must be brought to justice. Masterminds behind those acts must also be exposed and held accountable, their motives revealed to the public, without involving noble religious emotions of Egyptians (Muslims or Christians)."
