Freedom and Justice Party Condemns Violent Attack on Wafd Party Headquarters

In a press statement, Dr. Murad Ali, media adviser to the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP), said that the party and its leaders condemn any use of violence as a means of expressing opinion.

Dr. Ali pointed that certain individuals were deeply offended by the atmosphere of democratic transformation manifested in such heavy voter turnout, and wish to spoil the Egyptians’ joy of the free referendum on the new constitution.

He said the unfortunate attack on Wafd Party headquarters Saturday cannot be regarded as separate from attempts to spread violence in Alexandria the day before.

"It seems more certain that there are individuals who want to ignite the situation and spread chaos in Egypt.

"All patriotic parties and groups must reject violence and accept the ballot box as the arbitrator. The FJP will accept the result of the referendum whatever it is."

Dr. Mohamed Beltagy, FJP Secretary in Cairo, denounced the attack on the headquarters of the Wafd Party, and stressed that those who stand to benefit from such violence must be investigated.

"The attack on Wafd Party headquarters is a crime committed by individuals determined to spoil the celebration of democracy the world saw Saturday.

"We must look for those who stand to benefit from ruining this celebration. We must all confront them, and expose their despicable goals. I have contacted Abu-Ismail. He has strongly denied any connection between ‘Hazimoun’ (his support group) and the Wafd attack, which he denounced. He also condemned the Arabiya satellite TV channel’s accusation claiming Hazimoun’s involvement in the incident."
