Constituent Assembly Secretary: We Will Draft Constitution for All Egyptians

Dr. Amr Darrag, Secretary General of the Constituent Assembly (CA) entrusted with authoring Egypt’s new Constitution, said that everyone should know clearly that, for the first time, the Egyptian people participate positively in the drafting of the country’s new national charter, through balanced and real representation of all the Egyptian people, in a very reassuring approach, and through consultation sessions and visits made to provinces across Egypt to listen to all views.

In a statement to Ikhwanweb, Darrag added that there is a strong, broad consensus among the CA’s current members about rights and freedoms and about the basic components of the state.

"We will safeguard the rights and freedoms of all citizens, we clearly recognize citizenship, irrespective of religion, race or sex; and refuse to think in terms of minorities in Egypt: there are citizens who must fully enjoy all their rights."

Dr. Darrag further affirmed that the CA is concerned about the military council (SCAF)’s maneuvers to block the constitution-writing process and unilaterally write its own through a group of individuals chosen exclusively by SCAF.

"The CA is also concerned about the unconstitutional supplementary declaration issued by SCAF which is aimed at disrupting any attempt to write Egypt’s new national charter, especially with the article, in that Declaration, which gives SCAF, and not the people, the right to object to the new charter.

"We hope to author a Constitution that honors freedoms and rights of all citizens, despite the obstacles that cause concerns and fears for everyone."
