Freedom and Justice Party Hails Decree Reinstating Parliament as Victory for Popular Will

Dr. Essam El-Erian, Vice Chairman of the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP), lauded the President Mohamed Morsi’s decree rescinding the earlier military council (SCAF) decision to disband the freely elected Egyptian Parliament.

He said that the decree wrested legislative power back from SCAF, "Egyptian people have become responsible for the protection of legitimacy and safeguarding their well-deserved achievements and gains".

Erian further expressed his confidence that SCAF would respect the President and the legitimacy of his decree, and will not respond to certain parties’ incitement.

Meanwhile, Dr. Mohamed Beltagy, the Secretary General of the FJP in Cairo, said that the President’s decree affirms his refusal for SCAF to usurp legislative power, and that he also refuses the existence of a legislative vacuum.

He pointed that linking the decree to holding new parliamentary elections within 60 days after adoption of the Constitution deters those seeking to invalidate the Constituent Assembly.

Dr. Beltagy further said that the decree proves that the President is honoring the commitments he made before presidential elections results were announced, to freeze implementation of the complementary constitutional declaration, through wise balanced decisions.

Dr. Gamal Heshmat, member of the FJP’s National Committee, affirmed that the President’s decree to reinstate the People’s Assembly is a triumph for the will of the people, who are the source of all powers.

He pointed that this is also a victory for the civil state, popular will and the rule of law.
