Freedom and Justice Party MPs Seek End to Clashes Between Police and Demonstrators in Egypt, Safeguard Right to Demonstrate Peacefully

On Sunday afternoon, a number of Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) MPs came out in Mohamed Mahmoud Street in the vicinity of the Interior Ministry, including Dr. Osama Yassin, Assistant Secretary of the party and Chairman of the Youth Committee of the People’s Assembly; Adel Hamed and Jamal Hanafi, FJP MPs; Hatem Azzam and Mohamed El-Sawy, MPs from the Democratic Alliance for Egypt; and Dr. Mostafa Najjar, Mohamed Abu Hamed and Dr. Amr Hamzawy.

Jamal Hanafi told Ikhwanweb, "We are endeavoring to stop the bloodshed of Egyptian citizens. It is totally unacceptable that we let these violent events go on without interfering in the interest of the nation, the people and the great revolution".

He added, "We are here as MPs and mothers of martyrs in the vicinity of Interior Ministry. Yesterday, we initiated dialogue with both parties seeking to calm the situation and stop the violence. This has already been achieved. Now, there are only chants by demonstrators. We will talk with them again".

Dr. Mohamed El-Beltagy, FJP Secretary in Cairo, made diligent efforts to mediate between demonstrators and Interior Ministry top officials to implement the truce.

In the seaport province of Suez, MP Ahmed Mahmoud, FJP Secretary in the governorate, said that it was agreed clashes would stop between police and demonstrators in Suez near the Security Directorate, protesters would stand behind barriers and express their views peacefully.

Mahmoud said that the agreement is effective now, and things are calming down, "We are currently looking for a solution acceptable to everyone through a political agreement for cessation of violence and clashes completely in Suez, which claimed the lives of many martyrs and wounded".

In Alexandria, an FJP delegation, led by MPs Saber Abul-Fotouh, Chairman of the People’s Assembly Manpower Committee; and Salah Noaman, MP for east Alexandria district; met with young demonstrators, listened to their demands, and called for an initiative to calm the demonstrators and the police.

The MPs agreed with the youths of political stakeholders demonstrating in Alexandria that the Security Directorate will place barriers at a location determined by the Directorate beyond which the protesters are not to go, and that the demonstrators would express their opinions freely without going beyond this barrier.
