PA Youth Committee Recommends Dismissal of Egyptian Public Prosecutor, Cleansing of Interior Ministry

The Egyptian People’s Assembly (PA) Youth Committee recommended in its meeting today, chaired by Dr. Osama Yassin, holding Minister of Interior and the Ministry’s top officials fully responsible for the events of Port Said. The Committee also demanded effective cleansing of the Interior Ministry to be completed in a period not exceeding one month, with the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) bearing the responsibility for fulfilling this requirement as well as the formation of a Parliament committee to follow up the implementation of the resolutions. It also demanded the dismissal of the Egyptian Public Prosecutor, already a public requirement, according to Committee members.

Furthermore, the Committee recommended that a delegation should be selected from the committee, chaired by Deputy Bayoumi Ismail, to offer their condolences for the martyrs of the Port Said tragedy, in addition to the formation of a special investigations committee with broad powers to secure the witnesses as to ensure the confidentiality of investigations.

The Committee called for PA legislation to ensure a full judicious cleansing of the Interior Ministry, especially as current legislation is riddled with anomalies and loopholes. It also demanded immediate decisions by relevant authorities to distribute Tora detainees to various prisons and detention centers, and for those detainees to be held incommunicado in solitary confinement, in addition to proper application of prison regulations to them, with no preferential treatment over other prisoners. The Committee stressed the need for the transfer of former President Mohamed Hosni Mubarak to Tora prison hospital, after providing it with any necessary equipment, for him to be treated like any other prisoner, without any advantage or special benefit.

The Committee also held the Minister of Information responsible for inflammatory material that private and government satellite television channels broadcast to stir strife and anger the public. It also recommended urgent social dialogue with the real revolutionary youths to determine their demands and how to meet them.

Dr. Osama Yassin, Chairman of the Committee, said that efforts were exerted to calm the situation around the Interior Ministry buildings yesterday, but failed because armed youths accompanied by thugs were terrorizing people. He pointed out that every attempt to stop the clashes failed because of unruly behavior on both sides.
