Dr. Essam El-Erian, Vice Chairman of the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP), denied comments reported in his name to the effect that the military establishment will enjoy a special status in the new Constitution, far broader than in previous ones.

In a statement to IkhwanWeb, Dr. El-Erian stressed that: "The army, as a military establishment, has its own sensitivity and privacy. There certainly is a need for dialogue in order to avoid having a state within a state. No institution or establishment is above the State. Parliament is the supreme authority of the country, with control over all others."

Dr. El-Erian added: "The army is an institution with private issues  that should not be open for all. And whilst the army remains subject to parliamentary scrutiny, it should be consulted regarding legislation that would affect it, but Parliament is the decision-making authority, ultimately."

Regarding rumors of possible discussions on Military immunity, Dr. El-Erian stressed that there is a special military judicial system (military justice) for the military establishment, and that no guilty person enjoys immunity in any democratic country.
