Al-Shater Calls For the Protection of Revolution and it’s Achievements

The Muslim Brotherhood’s (MB), Deputy Chairman Eng. Khairat Al Shater stated that any legitimate constitution should be drafted by an elected entity. “In the case of endorsed stipulations or supra constitutional principles, all political, national, and Islamic trends will protest against them until they are withdrawn”.

Speaking during the fourth popular conference for "Sharia Institution for Rights and Reforms" on Monday, under the title “Towards a transparent election”, Shater said “The people nationwide will head towards the squares every Friday till their demands are met”. He slammed the efforts to circumvent the people’s will and counter the result of March’s referendum.

Addressing the crowds with his speech outlining the political leaders responsibility towards the successful elections, Al-Shater said that It is important to have cooperation and coordination with Islamist candidates from all Islamic currents, running in the parliamentary and Shura elections. He called on the people to commit and become pro-active and participate in the electoral procedure and protect it.

The elections should be taken seriously and all should be familiar with its process. We should all know where our names are registered and which polling stations to cast our votes in so that the elections are successful and the result be reflective of the society’s will, Shater added.

“The whole electoral procedure should be monitored with all its phases including checking the ballot boxes, names, and the end results after counting to assure its legitimacy away from rigging”.

He described the elections as a ‘means to an end’ and an obligation. The people in Egypt and the MB in particular have been suppressed for decades from taking part in shaping their future during the reign of the ousted Mubarak and his regime. He advised the politicians to demonstrate tolerance and patience towards one another, stressing that it was normal to have differences in ideologies and visions, with mutual respect. Focus should be on the unity of all factions and the success and protection of the revolution and its achievements.

For his part,  director of the Rights and Reforms Institution Dr. Ali Al-Salows asserted that all elections held prior to the revolution during the former regime were rigged. He urged the people to only vote for the candidate which fit the credentials describing it as a patriotic responsibility.

Dr. Talat Afifi, deputy chairman of the institution, agreed adding, “It is the duty of each and every individual to cast their votes. Those who will be in parliament are there to represent and serve the people. After all the people are the legitimate power and their wills should be respected”.
