The debate in Egypt continues following the Egyptian military’s rejection of US and Western financing to Egypt’s NGO’s believed to counter the revolution which began in January. Egyptians are growing increasingly critical of such open support for building political parties and civil society, as skeptism sets in.

According to Sayed Badawy, Wafd Party leader, who was speaking to an audience in his hometown in Tanta, this aid is designed to serve a specific political agenda which has nothing to do with supporting real democracy in Egypt. He added that the Egyptian revolution is in danger and enemies at home and abroad are spending millions to counter it.

He stated that the military junta is currently looking into and investigating the issue where funds, including nearly one billion LE by the US and 20 million Euros, was allocated to these NGOs.

Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) leader Abdul Hafiz el Sawi argued that the Egyptians have abandoned their ignorance and apathy following the revolution and are well aware of any schemes aimed at countering the revolution which offered them democracy and freedom. He said that Egyptians will not allow any entity to play a role in and control the transition to democracy through its financing.
