A colalition of hundreds of Muslim scholars from Al-Azhar and the Ministry of Endowment have announced the organization of a massive march Wednesday's afternoon from the area of Abbaseya to the headquarters of the Supreme Council of Armed Forces (SCAF). The march is calling for the independence of Al-Azhar from the control of other state institutions. It also calls for holding elections to choose the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar and the return of the Senior Scholars’ Committee.

The coalition has issued a statement calling on SCAF to intervene immediately in order to ensure the independence of Al-Azhar, and to integrate the Endowment and Dar Al-Iftaa under the umbrella of Al-Azhar. It has also called for holding free and fair elections to choose its leaders, and to re-draft Al-Azhar law in order to be consistent with its independence.

The statement highlighted the importance of Al-Azhar Institution, which has always been an Islamic platform to the whole world and a place from which great scholars and leaders in revolutions for change have graduated. They stressed that it was politicized by the former regime, leading to its change of path and duty. It called for all efforts to be united in order to bring Al-Azhar back to its status as a leading institution.
