An article in Washington Times cited Former Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfield as being concerned that the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt will take over the revolution.

He alleged that if elections were to be held the Islamist group would have a head start over disorganized secular parties adding that he believed no other political organizational entity exists in Egypt strong enough to manage the process against the Muslim Brotherhood. He added the MB is an organization that is serious.

Defense Secretary, Robert M. Gates who replaced Mr Rumsfield in December 2006, met in Cairo last week with the leaders of Egypt’s ruling military council and called on them to slow down the election timetable in order to allow new parties to develop.

Mr Rumsfield said that the current events in Egypt are far more important to the region and to US strategic interests than in any other mid east country. He renounced President Obama’s managing of the Libya crisis describing it as backwards accusing the United States has allowed the coalition to dictate the mission rather than the other way around.
