WikiLeaks Cable Warned Egypt’s Regime about Recurrent and Escalating MB Arrests

The latest among dozens of shaming cables is dated February 2010 as US officials voiced their concern over the escalating numbers of arrests and detentions among the Muslim Brotherhood members. More notably so was the arrest of three high ranking MB leaders and members of the group’s Executive Bureau.

The arrests took place soon after the group had announced the name of their newly-elected chairman, Dr. Mohamed Badie, in early February. The detainees included the group’s Deputy Chairman, Mahmoud Ezzat, media spokesman, Dr. Essam El-Erian, and Abdul Rahman Al-Bar, also high ranking.

The cable illustrated US officials’ growing awareness of Egypt’s domestic politics this year. According to the cables, which have not yet been brought public, the US noticed that the escalating amount of arrests came ahead of the 2010 polls and the group’s internal Shura election thereby threatened both polling processes.

The cable underscores the potential dangers of recurrent Brotherhood arrests, saying that the detention of leading figures, including the newly-elected Deputy Chairman, seemed to represent an escalation. The cable cautioned of the possible consequences of state repression, stressing that the arrests could backfire on the government which was already feeling insecure ahead of the elections.
