A Syrian official said the law the Israel Knesset passed Tuesday requiring a public referendum for any military pullouts in the Syrian Golan Heights territory and Jerusalem proves Israel’s disregard of international law and peace merits.

“The action is completely unacceptable,” the official said, speaking on behalf of Syrian foreign ministry.

“It is disregard of international law and the position and will of the entire international community, which has still acknowledged east Jerusalem and Golan in Syria as Arab occupied territories.”

“It does not change the fact that the Syrian Golan territory is under occupation and not negotiable, and that Golan making a full return to the fourth line of June 1967 is the basis for the establishment of peace.”

“Israel’s decisions to annex Golan and Jerusalem are null and void.”

He added that the Israeli decision “confirms that [the state] refuses the just and comprehensive peace merits under UN Security Council Resolutions 242 and 338 and the principle of land for peace.”

The Israeli Knesset voted in favor Monday of a controversial draft law mandating a referendum before Israel withdraws from Golan Heights in Syria and Jerusalem.
