MB offshoot in Jordan calls on gov’t to disregard US and Israeli pressures on nuclear development

The Islamic Action Front in Jordan issued a statement calling on the government not to yield to pressure from the US and Israel .  The Muslim Brotherhood offshoot and Jordan ’s main opposition group maintained that the 2 countries sought to thwart the country’s nuclear program intended for peaceful uses.

Official spokesperson for the group Jamil Abu Bakr asserted in a statement that “Such pressures, which seek to prevent Jordan from possessing new energy resources, represent a threat to the country’s security and should be rejected”.

Abu Bakr was reacting to earlier reports from Washington which claimed that the United States , objected to Jordan ’s management of its own uranium resources to run a civilian nuclear reactor for generating part of its energy needs as a result of Israeli’s underhanded pressure.

Jordan has been engaged in talks with the United States to sign a nuclear cooperation agreement, but Washington declined to permit Jordan supposedly its close ally to produce its own nuclear fuel. In fact the Jordanian government had signed nuclear collaboration deals over the past couple of years with other countries, including France , China and Russia , in a proposal to obtain nuclear know-how to build a nuclear reactor, south east of the Red Sea port of Aqaba .

According to King Abdallah of Jordan , Israel , which is known to have created nuclear weapons, was pressuring other countries to refrain from selling nuclear technology to Jordan .
