KHAN YOUNIS, -- Hamas renewed, on the sixth anniversary of the assassination of its leader and cofounder Abdelaziz Al-Rantisi, its vow to uphold the option of resistance and protect the national rights and constants.

During a ceremony held Saturday on this occasion in Khan Younis, senior Hamas official Saleh Al-Ruqub said that his Movement has pledged to follow in the steps of its great leaders and remain steadfast in the face of all challenges.

Ruqub highlighted in his speech some of the attributes that characterized Rantisi, and his stands that remained fresh in the minds of the Palestinian people and consolidated a stage full of sacrifices.

In a separate statement on Saturday, Hamas affirmed that the Palestinian resistance will never forsake the Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails no matter what happens and will not rest until all prisoners in Israeli jails enjoy freedom.

“On this great national day, the Palestinian prisoner day, we have to rise to the level of steadfastness enjoyed by our heroes in prison in the face of suppression, abuse and pain and in the face of the Arab letdown and the connivance of some people who sold everything for factional and personal gains,” the statement underscored.

For his part, Dr. Khalil Al-Hayya, a member of Hamas’s political bureau, said that the issue of prisoners is like the other Palestinian issues that need all forms of popular and armed resistance.

Dr. Hayya told a news conference held in Gaza city that the Palestinian people cannot achieve their goals especially the return of refugees to their homeland and the liberation of prisoners without rallying around a unified real resistance program that leads to the removal of the occupation from Palestine.

In the same context, the higher Islamic committee stated that the Palestinian prisoners are prisoners of war and not war criminals because they defend the land of Palestine that has been usurped since the Balfour declaration in 1917.

“The prisoners must be treated humanely and according to international laws and norms which guaranteed freedom and dignity for human beings,” the committee said in a statement issued on the Palestinian prisoner day.

For his part, Palestinian activist in prisoners’ affairs Abdelnasser Farwana told Al-Quds Press on Saturday that Israel’s persistence in its intransigent attitude towards the prisoner swap deal would not force the captors of soldier Gilad Shalit to compromise on their demands.

Farwana noted that this Israeli position could, instead, lead the Palestinian resistance to resort to force and capture more Israeli soldiers and settlers in order to get the Palestinian prisoners released.
