Egypt to play Spain in friendly

Egypt and Spain have agreed to face off in a friendly match scheduled for June 4. The European champions will use the match against the African champions as a pre-World Cup tune-up.

Although Egypt failed to qualify for the finals, favorites Spain says it will use the match as preparation for their opening tie against Switzerland 12 days later.

Egypt is largely seen by global football analysts as a strong African side that has done well in recent tournaments despite losing out to Algeria for a berth in this year’s World Cup.

Egypt beat Italy in last summer’s Confederations Cup in South Africa before being ousted by the United States in dramatic fashion.

The game is to be played at a venue which is yet to be decided.

Currently, the Pharaohs are at the Africa Cup of Nations in Angola, where they are bidding for a record seventh title.

Egypt, who have yet to beat Spain in five meetings, lost 2-0 when the teams last met in 2006.

Spain, World Cup favorites with many bookmakers following their triumph at the 2008 European Championship, are in Group H of the World Cup with Switzerland, Honduras and Chile.

Egypt are due to face Fabio Capello’s England side in a friendly on March 3.
