Dr. Ahmed Medhat Nasr, chief of the Egyptian Society of Hepatitis and Viral Liver Diseases, stressed that the number of Egyptians infected with liver diseases reached about 14 million Egyptians, with the rate of infection in some villages reaching 40%-50% of the total adults over the age of 40.

According to Dr. Nasr these statistics indicate, that the virus hepatitis “C” has entered nearly every house in Egypt, stressing that the recent statistics prove the existence of complications that arise from the infection of the virus such as chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis of the liver, liver cancer which ultimately may result in coma. These results were revealed during the opening of the 12th Conference for Liver and Digestive System Diseases at the Assuit University.

Abdul Ghani Abdul Hamid Suleiman, head of gastroenterology and hematology at the University of Assuit, asserted that   liver cancer is the second most common cancer in Egypt and is one of the leading causes of death among citizens.

He pointed out that "Half of the deaths of the Egyptians between the ages of 25 to 50 are due to the viral disease which attacks the liver and associated complications are usually detected without complaints by the patient and may unexpectedly unfold only during a clinical examination or medical test". Maher Al Assal, the head of the Faculty of Medicine alleged that 12% of Egypt’s population is infected with virus “C” pointing out that the incidence in Egypt is equal to about 4% of the world's patients as revealed recent scientific studies of the Academy of Scientific Research.
