The Medical Association in Alexandria organized a silent protest on Monday in front of the Syndicate demanding the application of the second phase of the new system of wage payments that has not been put into practice since 2008.

Dr. Mohamed Mohamed El-Banna, representative of the Doctor's Syndicate in Alexandria, described the sit-in protest as symbolic, with no intention of disabling Egypt’s health security. It was agreed to enforce the protest during the after-hours of the doctors in public hospitals, indicating their good will claiming if there was any animosity with the health system the protest would have in fact taken place in the hospitals.

He emphasized that the protest was a prelude to a meeting scheduled to be held on Tuesday, October 20, in the Sub-Associations and the Doctor’s Syndicate to discuss the escalating situation of the demands of the second phase of the pay advancement. The Minister of Finance had promised doctors earlier that the raise would be instigated. It was put off under the pretext that there were problems with the Ministry of finance. The doctors will discuss numerous issues including the setting of a minimum and maximum charge for patients' medical.

Protesters raised banners and chanted slogans including “We demand our rights and we should not beg for them. Where are our advances we want them now.”
