AUC Employee Among Swine Flu Cases Discovered

The American University in Cairo (AUC) affirmed that among the five swine flu cases discovered in the AUC student hostel in Zamalek Tuesday was an employee in the hostel.

Head of the AUC Media Center Duaa Farag told Ikhwanweb, “The employee infected is an American working in the student hostel reception division,” pointing out that the infected were transferred to the Fevers Hospital in ‘Abbasiyyah to receive the appropriate medical treatment while the two students who had come in from America are expected to be released from the hospital in the next few days.

Farag added that the Ministry of Health had decided to extend the health isolation period imposed on students residing in the hostel to Monday, June 15.

Farag further explained that until now AUC had not received the results of the tests conducted on AUC individuals outside the hostel referring to AUC’s full cooperation with the Ministry of Health to ensure the safety of student hostel residents throughout the health isolation period.

In a similar context, Health Minister Assistant in Precautionary Affairs Dr. Nasr El-Sayyid affirmed that samples from 150 AUC students in the 5th settlement are being examined and that the results are expected to appear Wednesday morning.

El-Sayyid added in a press conference held Tuesday night at the Ministry of Health that the swine flu cases were discovered in the framework of health screening measures conducted by the Ministry of Health on all those who were present in the building affirming that all the cases were immediately transferred to hospitals in Cairo and given Tamiflu vaccines and that all are in stable health conditions.

El-Sayyid continued explaining that samples were taken from the throats of all those who were present in the building as well as all AUC professors and Egyptian employees in the building.  The number of samples reached 165 and the results had turned out positive for five in addition to two other cases which were announced Monday making the total number of cases found within the building seven.

El-Sayyid said that 111 samples were taken from Egyptian employees in the building, those not residing in the building and those who were not under quarantine affirming that all their results turned out negative.

El-Sayyid also mentioned that appropriate awareness had been made for all those present in the building about the disease and precautionary measures against it as brochures and publications about the epidemic were distributed.
