Rights activists called for the approval of a clear system for dealing with detainees’ health needs affirming that the health release of Abdullah Tayil, Board Chairman of Exterior Egyptian Bank, who was accused of confiscating public money worth 600 million pounds, despite his case’s re-transferal to the Cairo Criminal Court, raises doubts concerning the influence of double standards over such decisions.

Southern Cairo Criminal Court decided to accept Tayil’s grievance request due to his health conditions and he was immediately freed from the accusations laid against him upon pronouncement of the court’s decision.  Tayil was also allowed to sit next to his family and didn’t have to wait for legal release procedures, stipulated by the law, whether in his re-detention or last release.

On the other hand, in spite of MB lawyer’s filing of communiqués and challenges in the Administrative Court to halt the execution of the Minister of Interior’s passive decision to abstain from moving a number of MB military hostages to hospitals, primarily Second MB Vice-Chair Khayrat El-Shater for whom a request was issued earlier for his movement to a suitable hospital, rather than just the prison’s hospital, to be at least treated at his own expense without being released, the Ministry of Interior obstructed any opportunity seized by the lawyers.

From his part, Executive Manager of the Arab Institution for Civil Society and Human Rights Sherif El-Hilaly affirmed that selective criteria depending on personal stances between the Ministry of Interior and the accused influenced release decisions.  El-Hilaly continued explaining that “Abdullah Tayil was probably considered as part of the NDP and therefore they were biased towards him.  On the other hand, the NDP adopts antagonistic stances towards the MB and hence strongly persists on denying them any freedom and deals with them in terms of settling accounts".

El-Hilaly further called for the mobilization of all legal, media, and rights means for MB detainees’ health releases and the filing of grievances explaining their extremely deteriorating health conditions upon which they must be released, otherwise, large-scale escalatory measures must be taken.

It is mentioned that among the diseased military detainees are Khayrat El-Shater who is suffering diabetes, heart disorders, and hypertension; Dr. ‘Esam Hasheesh who is suffering heart and stomach disorders; Ahmed Shusha, Ahmed Ashraf, and Mamduh El-Husseiny who suffer diabetes; and Sadek El-Sharqawy, Ayman Abdel-Ghany, and Dr. Diaa’ Farahat who are suffering severe joint pains.
