More than 130, 000 Azhar teachers announced their refusal of the Azhar staff second stage exams to be held on the first week of next February confirming that PM Dr. Ahmed Nazif had exempt them from these exams.

Azhar teachers further revealed that the secret behind Nadhif"s going back on his promise and issuing a decision instructing that exams be held is his fear of a revolt by public school teachers. Morever, Azhar teachers conceded that the government wants to control all educational institutions for political rather than educational purposes.

Azhar teachers also stressed that the fact that the Ministry of Education will be supervising the exams is an insult to Al-Azhar, an institution that has stood for more than a 1,000 years, a matter which led the Minister of Education Dr. Yusri El-Gamal to deny such an intention.
