Tareq El Hashimi (Vice- President of Iraq, head of the Iraqi Islamic Party) called for a popular referendum on the security agreement stressing on the necessity of Iraqi national harmony on any accord before proceeding.

In his field visit to the Central Preparatory School in Baghdad, El Hashimi added that the agreement issue is very sensitive and relates to the Iraqi people"s interests.

There is a lot of controversy over the destiny of the Iraqi- American security agreement that was approved by political forces and refused by others; moreover there are many conflicts inside the political blocs on the issue.

The agreement was refused by prominent political trends; Al Sadr Trend refused it and warned the Iraqi parliamentarians against passing the agreement that regulates the American existence in Iraq because it makes the US existence sovereign and legitimizes occupation.

At the same time, the US Defense Secretary warned against ignoring the agreement by the Iraqi parliament.
