Police Officers Belittle Women’s Issues

In her statements to Ikhwanweb, Lamia Lutfi (member of the New Women Foundation) stressed that police officers belittle the sexual harassment incidents the women face.

She indicated that what happens inside the police stations is the natural result of the absence of the qualified police officers to handle such incidents; same like when an officer attacked a complaining woman claiming that she should not have reported this to the police, the complaining woman told Al Masry Al Youm.

“An officer should basically realize his duty towards such incidents and that he might be brought into account if dealt recklessly with the issue; so that he would pursue all proper procedures,” indicated Lamia Lutfi stressing that such negligence resulted from the absence the deterring punishment against those officers. “Further, one may naturally watch police officers harassing the girls in streets rather than defending them,” she added.

An officer at El Omraniah police station sexually harassed two Egyptian sisters at the station when they went to report a harassment complaint. When they tried to complain about being also harassed inside the police station at the hands of the officer himself, the officer fabricated charges that the girls attacked him inside his workplace.

Ahmad Seif El Islam Hamad; manager of Hisham Mubarak Law center, told Ikhwanweb that such incidents is not denounced within El Omraniah police station since its suffers from the recklessness of the officers because hey are well-persuaded that they are the sole commanders inside the station. “This happens because the Interior Ministry veils the violations practiced by its officers,” he added asserting that what happens is the outcome of believing that the woman is for entertainment and belittling the civilians.
