Kosovo Independence Welcomed Internationally, Rejected by Russia and Serbia

Albanians in Kosovo declared their full independence from the state of Serbia to be the third country that declares its independence in the 21st century after Montenegro and East Timor. Kosovo Prime Minister Hashim Thaci confirmed that the United States and the European Union endorsed the independence which is “an achievement of the will of citizens to seek peace and understanding and to establish a state according to European and human rights standards”.
Thaci visited the neighboring republic of Macedonia and confirmed to Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski in the capital Skopje that:” The independence of Kosovo will never harm the good neighbourhood relations and friendship ties with Macedonia”.
 
On the other hand, Serbian president Boris Tadich said that his country ” will never recognize any unilateral independence for the Kosovo region and that his government will reconsider relations with countries that may recognize the independence of the Serbian region, that the Albanian leaders unilaterally declared, in contravention to international laws”.
 
Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica met in government headquarters in Belgrade, leaders of the Serbian minority in Kosovo and declared that “Joint attitudes have been taken to keep institutions in the Serbian regions of the region linked with Serbia, in addition to opening more institutions to face the independence of the Albanians”.
 
Milan Ivanovic, the leader of the Serbians in Kosovo who was among the delegation that met Kostunica in Belgrade, said that ” The European Union”s mission is an occupation to Kosovo, and the Serbians will never accept it neither inside nor outside the region. We will consider the independence null and void and will go on with the institutions linked to our beloved homeland Serbia”.
 
Meanwhile, the Serbian army carried out war games that included its air and land forces near the northwestern borders with Kosovo.
 
In Brussels, the European Union agreed on deploying a 2000-member security force in Kosovo within two weeks, comprising policemen and lawyers ” to prevent any human rights violations and to ensure that government institutions are working according to European standards, plus fighting corruption, organized crime and hunting war crimes suspects” .
 
Russian President Vladimir Putin has also declared his rejection to Kosovo declaration of independence.
 
For his part, Dr. Bakr Ismail the manager of the Kosovo government office in the Egyptian capital Cairo told Ikhwanweb that the Russian and Serbian attitude towards Kosovo”s declaration of independence especially from Serbia that committed genocides and war crimes against the Kosovo Albanians. He also pointed out that this unilateral declaration of independence has been supported by more than forty Islamic states in addition to European major powers and the United States.
 
He saw that this day of independence is historical not only for the Kosovo Albanians but also for all the Balkan region which is witnessing the latest independence of a country that was a part of the Yugoslav union that collapsed in the 1980s.
 
Dr. Mohamed Habib, the first deputy chairman of the Muslim Brotherhood, welcomed the move and said that the independence will allow people in Kosovo to lead a normal life which will be void of the repressions practiced by the Serbian government. He welcomed this move and reiterated the Muslim Brotherhood”s call for giving self-determination to all oppressed peoples and occupied territories.
