Egyptian Administrative Justice Orders Engineers Syndicate Sequestration Lifted

The Administrative Court issued a ruling on Sunday Feb, 3rd, 2008, in which it ordered Sequestration over the Egyptian Engineers Syndicate be lifted. The court overturned also the decision of the judicial committee chief supervising the elections of Engineers Syndicate in which he prevents fixing a date for holding the syndicate elections to elect a board and a chairman for the engineers. The court also ordered this committee chief to call for holding elections .

“Engineers Against Sequestration” filed a lawsuit in which it called for canceling the ruling the chief justice of South Cairo court, being a guardian on the syndicate, for refusing to set a date for holding the syndicate elections to elect a head and a board for the engineers. The engineers received the syndicate members with overwhelming happiness and chanted “long live justice”. Some of them confirmed to Ikhwanweb that the court ruling will restore hope to engineers whose rights have been violated throughout the past 13 years during which the syndicate was kept under sequestration.

Dozens of members of “Engineers under Sequestration” staged a celebrating rally in front of the State Council after the “historical” ruling was issued. The engineers gave government thirty days deadline to implement the ruling and hold the syndicate elections as soon as possible although some of them expected that the government may circumlocute in implementing this ruling. For his part, Omar Abdullah, spokesman and coordinator of “Engineers Against Sequestration” told Ikhwanweb that there are more than 200000 engineers who can”t practice their right to elect their syndicate board. Abdullah called on Egyptian government to be an honest rival and to respect Egyptian court rulings and start to carry out election measures.

Engineer Tarek Al Nabarawi, a leader in “Engineers Against Sequestration” saw this ruling as a victory for all professional associations which are denied their right of holding elections because this ruling applies to all professional associations, not only the Engineers Syndicate alone. He also pointed out that unless the Egyptian government implements the ruling, a real disaster may take place.
