Palestinian woman returned immediately to jail after delivering baby

A Palestinian female detainee gave birth to a baby boy at a late night hour on Friday in the Israeli hospital of Meir Kfar Sava under strict security measures that blocked presence of any of her relatives.

The Mandela foundation catering for prisoners affairs said that it appealed against the central court in Tel Aviv”s decision to block both its lawyers Buthaina Dakmak and Taghrid Jahshan from visiting the detainee, Fatma Al-Zak, while in hospital.

The higher court asked the prosecution to respond to the appeal by Sunday 20/1, which practically meant that the detainee would be already back in jail.

The two lawyers voiced objection at the court ruling because Zak would be returned to her cell immediately after birth. They tabled another appeal with the court, which was also turned down.

Zak is the fourth Palestinian captive to give birth to a baby while in occupation jails during the Aqsa intifada.

IOF soldiers arrested Zak, 40, while in the company of her niece Rawda Habib, 30, who is also a mother of four children and who was also arrested along with Zak. The IOF charged both with planning to launch an attack and were subjected to cruel interrogation, humiliation and torture. They were held in Sharon jail without trial since 20/5/2007.

Meanwhile, a Palestinian prisoner Allam Atari lost one of his eyes in occupation jails due to medical neglect.

The Palestinian prisoner”s club warned that Atari might lose vision in both eyes if immediate treatment was not accorded to him.

The Israeli prisons authority had refused to accord proper treatment to Atari, who is serving a 16-year-sentence, despite his repeated demands.

The Nafha society defending prisoners” rights, for its part, warned of an “explosion” in occupation jails due to the continued Israeli prisons authority”s inhuman, humiliating practices against the Palestinian prisoners.
