11 MB Students at Al Fayyum University Dismissed

11 MB Students at Al Fayyum University Dismissed

Only days before the start of the first semester exams, Dr. Ragaa Ahmed Eid, the dean of the Faculty of Education in Al Fayyum university, dismissed eleven Muslim Brotherhood students on charge of preparing and distributing exam leaflets on students.

A week ago, the faculty board referred the students to a disciplinary board and issuing decisions of these boards has been put off till shortly before exams to deny students the chance to enter exams or even a sufficient time to appeal against them.

The dismissal decisions are for 3 weeks starting from Dec, 17th, 2007 against:
Saif Abd Al-Karim, a fourth year student, History Dept
Mohamed Ahmed Abdul Sattar, a third year student, Geography Dept
Mostafa Ismail, a fourth year student, Primary Education Dept.
This means denying these students access to some exams in the first semester.

A two-week dismissal decision was issued against:
Mahmoud Gamal Khalifa, a third year student, Maths Dept
Ahmed Mohamed Said, a fourth year student, Maths Dept.

Six other students have been dismissed for two weeks although they faced no investigation:
Mohamed Saber Ali, a fourth year student, Primary Education Dept
Abdul Rahman Kolaib, a fourth year student, Geography Dept
Mohamed Al Sayed Rabie, a second year student, primary education dept.
Ahmed Abdul Hakim Abdul Aziz, a third year student, Arabic dept
Emad Hamdi, a third year student, primary education dept
Mahmoud Fawzi Ahmed, a second year student, primary education dept.

The dismissed students voiced their anger over these unjust decisions, specially during the period of the semester exams, wondering what is the benefit from these decisions that certainly do not aim to protect students or secure a safe future for them.

In a previous incident, Dr. Hani Hilal, the Minister of Higher Education, threatened student Mostafa Ismail and his father with detention in the Conference Centre at the university last Sept, 23rd.

The minister threatened also on the same day student Mohamed Mostafa, a fourth year student Arabic dept, and he is currently along with other two colleagues under detention in Wadi Al-Natrun prison.

Al Fayyum university holds the highest record of security intervention in 2007 to the context that it has been notoriously dubbed “The University of the Kidnapped” due to the huge number of students who were kidnapped and arrested during 2007.
