Arrests Intensify Ahead of Elections, 12 Detained In K. Shaykh

The government is intensifying its arrest campaign among members of the MB targeting areas were candidates are running for the upcoming Shura Council elections on June 11. Following arrests in Sharqīyah, Banī Suwayf, and Daqahlīyah, police forces arrested today 12 more activists affiliated with the MB in the governorate of Kafr ash Shaykh among supporters of MB candidate in the District of Balteem. By intensifying its crackdown against members of the MB, the government is trying to undermine the MB”s ability to compete for the upcoming Shura Council elections in which the MB has managed to field 18 candidates (total number is not yet confirmed) out of 88 seats up for grasp. The Muslim Brotherhood condemned the government oppression and considered it another episode in the government assault on democracy which is crippling the political life in Egypt.
