Rights Organization: 172 Junta Violations Against Journalists in 2015 To-Date, Mostly by Police

The Association for Freedom of Thought and Expression (AFTE) has documented violations of press and media freedom in the first half of 2015 – until 23 June.


AFTE said there were 172 violations against journalists and media workers in the first half of the year: 34 violations in January, 10 in February, 28 in March, 43 in April, 38 in May, and 19 in June.


Violations included 19 arrests, one case of unfair dismissal, 14 cases of unlawful detention, two cases of suspension from work, one judicial order of imprisonment, 34 physical abuses, 8 cases of verbal abuse and insults, one case of dismissal from work, one case of arbitrary administrative investigation, 6 stop and search cases, 85 bans or removals of contents, and one storming of media outlet headquarters.


According to AFTE, offenders responsible for those violations included police forces: 91 cases; private security or guards: 24; the judiciary: 9; government officials: 25; press or media organizations: 1 case; civilians: 19; and 3 violations by unknown parties.
