Junta Security Apparatus Arrests Egyptian Journalist Hassan Kabany

Junta Security Apparatus Arrests Egyptian Journalist Hassan Kabany

Coup security authorities arrested Egyptian journalist Hassan Kabany from his home in the "October" district (west of the capital Cairo) Thursday evening.

Rights movement Journalists For Reform (JFR – affiliated with the anti-coup Egyptian opposition) affirmed that its Coordinator-General Hassan Kabany was arrested by junta security forces Thursday, adding that it did not know his whereabouts until the early hours of Friday morning. The arrest of this highly-respected journalist comes two days before the anniversary of the January 25, 2011 Revolution.

Kabany took up the position of JFR Coordinator after he founded the movement with a number of groups of young journalists that demanded press freedoms since 2009.

This is the second time Hassan Kabany is arrested by the junta’s security apparatus. The first time was during the January 25 Revolution in 2011. His only crime was his work as a journalist doing his professional duty in Cairo.

Egypt has been experiencing a significant decline in the freedom of journalists since the July 3, 2013 coup.
