Amr Darrag: Kerry’s Remarks Reprehensible, Fundamentally Wrong

Dr. Amr Darrag, leading member of the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP), rejected U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry’s latest remarks accusing Muslim Brotherhood of "stealing Egyptian Revolution", stressing that the military coup is the one that stole the January 25 Revolution and trampled popular will.

Earlier, Wednesday evening, John Kerry spoke at the State Department in Washington to heads of American multinational corporations, and stated that the Muslim Brotherhood stole the revolution against Mubarak from young people who started it through Twitter and Facebook.

Dr. Darrag stressed that Kerry’s comments are flawed and indicate he’s not qualified to talk about Egypt’s internal affairs or to issue assessments about the revolution.

"The role of the Muslim Brotherhood in all stages of the Revolution is clear and well-documented, from January 25 (2011), through the so-called ‘Battle of the Camels’ and all the demonstrations and other activities in which millions of citizens demanded the military hand over power to civilians, to rejecting the military coup against the principles of the January 25 Revolution and the legitimacy established for civilians."

Dr. Darrag asked: "How can you call thieves those who earned the trust of the Egyptian people in all 5 different free and fair elections held since the January 25th Revolution monitored by international organizations and praised by all countries including the US government?  Is it not the military coup that indeed stole the will of the people? Dr. Darrag added "It has become absolutely clear that US supported the coup from the first moment, and now supports policies that violate basic human rights and American values". He affirmed that Kerry’s accusations against the Muslim Brotherhood put to rest baseless claims that the U.S. administration supports the Brotherhood.

He concluded "Now, it has become clear to all that the U.S. government is behind the attempts to abort the Arab Spring in all countries that have gone that route.

"We are confident that the will of the people shall ultimately triumph."
