FJP’s Ashri: Election and Political Rights Law Must Be Finalized without Further Delay

Mukhtar Ashri, Chairman of the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP)’s Legal Committee, affirmed that Egyptian Supreme Constitutional Court (SCC)’s decisions on the new House of Representatives election and political rights laws are binding for the Shura Council.

The SCC, headed by Justice Maher Beheiri, in its Saturday session, decided to amend 4 articles in the House of Representatives election law and 9 articles in the political rights law pertaining to constituency districting and people barred from contesting the elections.

In a statement to Ikhwanweb, Ashri said: "Articles rejected by the SCC as unconstitutional must be amended. As for the SCC’s recommendations, Shura Council has the right to deal with them according to internal voting requirements.

"Shura Council must finalize amendments and address SCC observations to comply with the Constitution without further delay, so we can complete the process of democratic transition, and focus on the pursuit of stability and institution-building."
