Abdel-Moneim Abdel-Maksoud, Muslim Brotherhood lawyer, stressed that the legal status of the group was 100% clear and well-established, and that there was nothing in the political arena to change its status.

"The Muslim Brotherhood is an umbrella organization, not a charity subject to NGO laws.

"The Brotherhood has existed for decades and its status is completely legal. If things change, the group will fix its legal position as required by relevant laws."

Earlier, a number of lawsuits were filed demanding the Muslim Brotherhood should be disbanded – demands with no legal basis, and have been adjourned to March 2013.

Mukhtar Ashri, Chairman of the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP)’s Legal Committee, said: "The Administrative Court already ruled, back in 1949, that the Muslim Brotherhood is an Islamist group that operates in compliance with the Constitution and is in no violation of any laws. Subsequently, the revolutionary government of Gamal Abdel-Nasser decided to disband the group – a decision that was challenged immediately. So far, this appeal or legal challenge is still before the Supreme Administrative Court that has not ruled over it as yet.

"We asked the court to suspend consideration and litigation sessions of the new lawsuits pending the completion of the earlier appeals against Nasser’s revolutionary court decision. Certainly, and by virtue of the Constitution and the law, the Muslim Brotherhood is 100% legal."
