Ashri: FJP Will Challenge Al-Shater Disqualification Decision in Few Hours

Mukhtar Ashri, President of the Legal Committee of the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP), said that his Committee will submit a formal grievance against the decision of the Supreme Presidential Electoral Commission (SPEC) to disqualify and exclude Khairat Al-Shater from Egypt’s presidential elections.

In a statement to Ikhwanweb, Ashri said that the FJP’s Legal Committee would submit the official grievance within the next few hours, 48 hours at the most.

SPEC announced that it excluded 10 nominees from the list of candidates for the presidential elections scheduled for May 23 and 24, because they do not meet one or more of the legal conditions necessary for successful application.

SPEC stated that it tasked its Secretary-General Justice Hatem Begato with notifying those who have been excluded, so any of them who wish to appeal the decision may do so before the set deadline.

Those who have been disqualified and excluded from running in the presidential election are: Omar Suleiman, former Vice-President; Khairat Al-Shater, former Deputy Chairman of the Muslim Brotherhood; Hazem Salah Abu Ismail, lawyer; Dr. Ayman Nour, Chairman of Ghadd Althawra party; Murtada Mansoor, lawyer; Mamdouh Qutb, former intelligence officer; Ibrahim Ahmed Al-Gharib; Ahmed Mohamed Awad; Hossam Khairat; and Ashraf Baroma.
