Three MB Supporters Arrested and Three Injured in New Attack by Egyptian Police in Alexandria

Egyptian security forces assaulted and beat campaigners of MB candidate for the Karmooz district Mahmoud Atia in Alexandria early Tuesday, during a confrontation which turned violent. Forces attacked the group while they were hanging election posters depicting his achievements during the last five years.

According to police they opened fire only when the fighting spiralled out of control into the air to scare the Brotherhood members, admitting some were hit but only accidently. Three Brotherhood members were arrested during the incident namely, Ayman Awad, Ammar Ashour and Ahmed Omar.

The wounded MB members were taken to hospital.

Khalaf Bayoumi, director of the Shehab Center for Human Rights, has emphasized that shooting on candidates’ supporters is a flagrant violation of freedom of expression and political rights. He stated that the shooting took place in the MP’s circuit adding that he has the right to display his accomplishments at any time as they are too plentiful to enumerate and he is not restricted to a specific period of time because he is currently a deputy and enjoys parliamentary immunity.

The incident was documented and urgent legal moves have been made against police officers who shot supporters of the MB MP and all officials will be prosecuted.
