Habib: We Agree with Egypt’s Mufti, Reject Religious Parties

Dr. Ali Gomaah, the Egyptian mufti rejected establishing parties on a religious basis in Egypt, confirming that this will lead to sectarianism among Muslims, which contradicts with the Islamic Sharia (law) .

Asked about the Muslim Brotherhood’s seeking a political party, the mufti said in “Al-Beit Beitk” TV show on Wednesday that the Egyptian social fabric has more than one religion, and the constitution rejects creating a sect in a society which is void of sectarianism, because this harms security and social stability. He added that if the Muslim Brotherhood’s future part will lead to division among Muslims, “I give a fatwa that that this is against Sharia (law)”; therefore, we must know the target of establishing such a party .

For his part, Dr. Mohamed Habib, the first deputy chairman of the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) said in a statement to Ikhwanweb that ” the Muslim Brotherhood agrees with the statement of the Egyptian Mufti; the mufti speaks about establishing parties on a religious basis which leads to a discrimination between Muslims and others and leads to making clerics having the final say and upper hand in ruling the country and that they rule according to a divine right; all this is totally rejected by the Muslim Brotherhood.

Habib added that what the MB means by a party is a civil party with Islamic reference in a way that doesn’t discriminate between all sections of society, a party that includes all citizens regardless of their religion or creed, a party that believes in democracy which is based on a political plurality and a peaceful transfer of power and that a country that has three authorities, the legislative, executive and judicial authorities, with a full separation between powers.

Habib added that the party that the Muslim Brotherhood seeks has two references: an ideological reference given that the law issued by the People’s Assembly is steming from the Islamic Sharia; the second reference is that the nation is the source of authorities through a people’s Assembly the reflects the free and real desire of people and the People’s Assembly is entrusted with ratifying legislations and laws and it has the right to make use of opinions of religious scholars and those specialized in all walks of life and the People’s Assembly is the only one who has the right to ratify legislations.
