Hamas calls on Ki-moon to take instant decision ending Gaza siege

GAZA, Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum on Sunday called on UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon to take immediate and urgent decision ending the suffocating Israeli blockade on the Gaza Strip.

In a press statement to the Palestinian information center (PIC), spokesman Barhoum said that Ki-moon’s visit to Gaza has coincided with a number of Israeli escalating moves against the Palestinian people in occupied Jerusalem, the West Bank and the Strip.

He added that this visit is a positive step but not enough and its results will not be clear unless they are translated into action and not by speeches of condemnation and censure.

For his part, MP Jamal Al-Khudari, the head of the popular committee against the siege, stated Sunday that the outcome of Ki-moon’s visit to Gaza has been disappointing for one and a half million Palestinians who pinned hopes on him to end the blockade imposed on them.

Khudari added that Ki-moon in his speech in Gaza did not mention the suffering of those whose homes were destroyed by the Israeli war and their factories shut down as a result of their failure to buy raw materials or the problem of the unemployed, the power crisis, the closed crossings, the difficult health situation and many other impacts of the Israeli blockade.

He said that Ki-moon’s pledge to finish the UNRWA housing project in Khan Younis is insufficient step in the presence of many projects to build 2, 200 housing units in Gaza stalled due to the Israeli blockade imposed for four years.
