Benghazi is off-limits for Amnesty International

A team of Human Rights researchers, from Amnesty International AI, was prevented from boarding a plane heading for Benghazi , the second largest city in Libya . The AI team is on a fact finding mission to assess the human rights situation. This is AI’s second visit to Libya ; the last was in February of 2004.

According to sources from Human Rights Solidarity LHRS, the most active Libyan human rights watch dog based in Geneva Switzerland , the AI team was about to board the 10:00 am flight from Tripoli ’s International airport, and suddenly agents from the security forces stopped them.Benghazi has seen active protests, by relatives of hundreds of victims of forced disappearances, over the past 18 months, and according to reports by LHRS, over 300 cases of deaths of political detainees were officially declared, most of them in Benghazi , Derna and el-Beidha
