SHRC Slams Media, Political Silence to Human Rights Issues in Syria in Arab Summit

The Syrian Human Rights Committee lamented the ” the shameful political negligence and bad media coverage” of human rights issues in Syria during the Arab summit that Damascus hosted last Saturday and Sunday .

The SHRC said in a statement, a copy of which was obtained by Ikhwanweb, that:” The Arab summit was held in Damascus amid a political and media silence towards the grave human rights violations committed in Syria”.
“Given that Syria is the host of the summit, there should have been a focus on freedoms. However, nothing happened even amid tight measures for giving press licences and amid a suspicious negligence from even some human rights activists who evaded the human rights issue and resorted to generalization that deprived the message of its content”, added the SHRC.

“The summit”s final media conference included only regime”s proposals and disagreements while Syria”s issues of reform and public freedoms, politically motivated detentions, firing at civilian citizens, arresting more than four thousand citizens, the disappearance of about twenty thousand detainees, and the tough sentences issued by both military and emergency courts, were absent”.

The Syrian Human rights Committee confirmed that ” it laments this shameful political neglect and the bad media coverage to human rights issues in Syria during the summit. It added that this summit will remain unimportant while human rights are violated in Syria and the entire Arab World.
