Ministry of detainees appeals to Red Cross to save female hunger striker

The ministry of detainees and ex-detainees in Gaza appealed Sunday to the Red Cross and women”s rights organizations to save urgently the life of female prisoner Nora Al-Hashlamon, 37, from Al-Khalil, who went on hunger strike for the twelfth consecutive day in the Israeli Talmond prison for women.

In a press release received by the PIC, Dr. Atef Edwan, the minister of prisoners” affairs, held Israel fully responsible for the life of prisoner Hashlamon, pointing out that this is the second time the prisoner goes on hunger strike in order to demand her release and to protest the Israeli policy of administrative detention carried out against her.

Dr. Edwan explained that the prisoner had gone on hunger strike for 27 consecutive days and ended the strike after receiving promises by the prison director that there would be no renewal of her administrative detention, but the IOA broke its promises and renewed for the seventh time her detention for six months claiming presence of a secret file against her.

The minister added that as a result of this arbitrary policy, prisoner Hashlamon decided to go on another hunger strike to pressure the IOA to release her in order to return to her six children who were left behind without a breadwinner especially since her husband is also administratively imprisoned in Israeli jails.

The minister highlighted that the imprisoned mother is suffering from kidney disease and her body has become extremely emaciated, but she is determined to continue the hunger strike even if it costs her her life.

Her husband who is imprisoned in the Negev prison expressed his deep concern about the life of his wife, pointing out that his wife is imprisoned without leveling any charge against her and her detention was renewed many times without any justification.

Her husband explained that the day of his wife”s release turned into grief and pain, their six children were waiting to receive their mother who was supposed to be released, and as their mother was exchanging goodbyes with her prison mates and getting ready to go home, the prison administration told her half an hour before her release that there was a decision to renew her detention.

In the same context, a Palestinian human rights center appealed to the international human rights organizations, the Red Cross and the Arab Knesset MPs to intervene urgently to save the life of the imprisoned mother.
