Egyptian Citizen Tortured To Death Inside Police Station

Egyptian citizen Mohamed Nabawi died after he was severely tortured inside Ussim police station, Giza .

This incident has repeatedly recurred in police stations, torturing to death citizens in a country which is now a member in the UN’s Human Rights Council.

Mohamed Nabawi, 24 years, was going from his village, Tanash, to the neighboring village of Bortus on his motorcycle when he was stopped by an officer and a policeman who demanded to see his ID. He told them that he forget his ID papers and offered his driving licence instead, triggering a flurry of insults and slabs and kicks from the policemen who took him after that to the police station.

Mohamed faced, in the police station, the worst kinds of torture and insult. His brother, Abd Al-Hafiz who is working the Central Authority for Reconstruction, rushed to Ussim police station, where he saw his brother severely tortured. He tried to enter but he was denied access. Later on, he noticed unusual measures: an ambulance entering the police station, followed by cars carrying Ussim prosecution chief, Giza security directorate manager and the penal investigations manager.

Abd Al-Hafiz asked again about his brother Mohamed. A policemen said to him: Get out now because there is a problem, there is a Mohamed Nabawi who died isuide. Abd Al-Hafiz was stunned. He rushed into the police station and asked the police chief about his brother. The police chief responded: Your brother was arrested with cannabis. While he was interrogated, he committed suicide by throwing himself from the window of the police station.

Abd Al-Hafiz waited for the initial report of the forensic medicine, which confirmed that the body has a cut below the chin, a bruise on the left side of the chest, and other bruises across the body. This report contradicts with the allegations of the police chief. He lodged appeals and complaints to many officials.

What added insult to injury was that the police chief accused Mohamed and his brothers of drug trafficking, and a policeman visited him at home to make him sign on a blank sheet, seemingly exercising pressure on him to make him forget the issue of his brother’s death at the hands of Egyptian police officers.
